Car-Part.com: Tools for Recyclers
PHOENIX AUTOMOTIVE CORES

CMS/Morrell, an established and knowledgeable leader in the recycling industry, started in February 1998 when Jay Robie started buying and selling scrap metal. In 2001, Lee Morrell and Jay Robie, owners of CMS/Morrell, purchased their first building and started recycling electronics as well as non-ferrous and ferrous metals. The following year they purchased their first roll-off truck and started recycling scrap steel and trash hauling operations.

They soon began purchasing catalytic converters and selling them to processing facilities.

"We started decanning and processing our own catalytic converters in 2003," said Morrell. "Since then we've become the only decanner for catalytic converters in the entire state of Arizona."

For a company that has branched out and started up new areas of business, it is vital to have a strong sound philosophy to build upon. Robie says their philosophy is one of excellence.

"In any industry that we become involved, we feel that our complete involvement is essential, either we are in all the way or we need to get out," explained Robie. "Nothing is to be done half way. We need to completely adapt to the industry standards and/or improve upon them."

With this in mind, in January 2004, Robie and Morrell decided to venture into another new area - automotive cores. They hired Mike Sabori, who has over 25 years of experience in the core supplier industry to act as general manager of their new venture - Phoenix Automotive Cores. It was established to meet the needs of the auto remanufacturing industry by providing automotive cores for late-model domestic, import, and truck models for the U.S. market.

In June 2006 the operations were established in a 25,000 square foot building located on two acres. In October 2006, Phoenix Automotive Cores started operating under its own name. Soon the automotive core business expanded to markets in Europe, Mexico, and Central and South America. Phoenix Automotive Cores has over 400,000 parts in stock and buys about 15,000 parts per month. They recently moved into another new facility that spans 60,000 square feet and sits on six acres. The new facility is custom-built to handle the expansion of the core business.

"We strongly view education of our clients and suppliers as vital," said Robie. "Keeping them in the dark" is archaic and detrimental. Thus, we are involved actively in training both our clients and suppliers to the ins and outs of the automotive core supplier industry. We are looking at building long term relationships based on honesty, trust and an open dialog.

"Customer service is of the utmost importance. We attend to our customer the way we would want to be attended to. The keystone to our success and enjoyment in this industry is the people we work with, and that work for us."

In July of 2007, Phoenix Automotive Cores became the first automotive core supplier to be invited by the ARA University to provide training for automotive recyclers. Through the ARA University, training segments produced by Phoenix Automotive Cores are offered to educate the industry on issues presented by the ARA.
